What is “Green” and how do I get there?

The expression “going green” generally refers to creating a more environmentally sustainable way of performing an act. Reducing emissions, waste and natural resource consumption minimizes our personal footprint on the Earth. Likewise, sustainability occurs when we consume resources slower than the Earth replenishes them. And we produce less waste and pollution than the Earth can absorb and eliminate.

The Department of Energy estimates that residential buildings are responsible for almost 1/4th of the total energy consumption in the U.S. Each household has an opportunity to significantly impact sustainability.

  • Equipment, Electronics and Appliances. Tighten your home and make it more efficient to heat or cool. Install high efficiency appliances such as refrigerators, lighting and electronics, and also consider water efficient appliances such as low flow toilets and faucets.
  • Lifestyle. Do you walk or bike instead of driving? Do you carpool when possible?
  • Recycling. Are you taking full advantage of your city’s recycling program? Do you reuse items such as glasses and cloth napkins to avoid throwing away paper goods?
  • Think small. Do you over-purchase? For instance do you have a larger car, home or even appliance than you really need?

“Going Green” requires raising our awareness, and modifying behavior. Keep reading to learn more ways you can help.
